Canvas apps give you a blank canvas to design any UI layout — best for mobile-first or highly custom interfaces with simple data sources. Model-driven apps are generated from the Dataverse data model — best for complex business applications with rich forms, views, dashboards, and business process flows. Both can be embedded in Teams.

Governance success requires three things: Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies that control which connectors can be used together, a clear environment strategy (Dev/Test/Prod) with the CoE Kit for visibility, and a citizen developer program that trains makers on security and compliance standards. Without these, Power Platform sprawl is inevitable.

Copilot Studio is the evolution of Power Virtual Agents, now deeply integrated with Microsoft 365 Copilot. It lets you build custom AI agents that can be published to Teams, websites, and Dynamics 365 — with GPT-4 generative answering, knowledge base grounding, and tool calling via Power Automate.

For many integration scenarios — HR system to Teams notifications, SharePoint form to Dynamics 365, approval chains — Power Automate is excellent and far cheaper than middleware. For complex, high-volume, or real-time integrations requiring transformation logic and error handling, Azure Integration Services (Logic Apps, Service Bus, API Management) is more appropriate.

For apps using only Microsoft 365 data sources (SharePoint, Teams, Outlook), Microsoft 365 licenses include Power Apps and Power Automate at no extra cost. Dataverse, premium connectors, and high-volume scenarios require Power Apps Per App or Per User premium licenses.
